QR code labels for storage boxes: do you need to buy special stickers?

You do not need to buy branded QR stickers or a label subscription. Here is how QR box labels work, what to print on them and which label sheets to use.

No, you do not. A QR code on a storage label is just a short code that points to a record in an app. Any printer and a sheet of ordinary sticky labels will do. You only need special stickers if the app you choose insists on its own.

How QR box labels work

Each label carries a unique code. When you scan it with your phone, the app looks up that code and shows you what you recorded for that box: a list of items, usually with photos, and where the box is kept.

The label itself holds almost nothing. All the useful information lives in the app, which means you can change what is in a box without ever reprinting its label.

Buying stickers or printing your own

Several companies sell packs of ready printed QR stickers with a companion app. They work, but read the small print on the app. (Prices checked on 3 November 2026.)

So with a sticker kit you usually pay twice: once for the stickers and again, every year, to keep scanning them. Your labels also only work with that one app.

Printing your own costs a few cents per label and you can reprint any label in seconds. The only real advantage of a kit is that you do not need a printer.

What to print on each label

Print more than the QR code. Phones run flat and boxes get stacked with the code facing the wall.

On boxes that hold anything sensitive, such as documents or valuables, leave the name off and print the code only. Anyone walking past your storage unit can read a label that says "Jewelry".

Which labels to buy

A quick privacy check

Before you choose an app, find out what is inside its QR codes. Some codes contain a web address that anyone can scan and open. Ideally the code should mean nothing to a stranger and only work inside your own account.

In FindMyItem, each label holds only a random code for that one container. It identifies the box, never you, so a stranger who scans it learns nothing about you or what is inside.

Printing your own labels with FindMyItem

  1. Tap Pack boxes and create a batch of numbered boxes.
  2. Choose one of seven label sizes, from sticky label sheets to a label printer, and what to print: the name, code and place; the code only; or the QR only. A live preview shows each label before you print.
  3. Print the PDF on your sticky label sheet and stick the labels on.
  4. Photograph items straight into each box as you pack. You can name them later; the app suggests names by reading packaging, book titles and barcodes, all on your phone.
  5. To check a box later, scan its label. You see everything inside, with photos.

QR labels, scanning and search are all in the free plan. With Pro you can share your boxes with up to 5 other people (6 including you), and there is no charge for additional users. FindMyItem is on iPhone for now (iOS 16 or later); Android and iPad versions are coming.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any QR code generator? You can, but a code made by a general QR generator just opens a link or some text. It will not connect to an inventory you can search. Use an app that creates the codes and keeps the records.

Do QR labels need the internet to scan? It depends on the app. FindMyItem keeps your inventory on your phone first, so scanning and searching work in a attic or cellar with no signal.

What happens to my labels if I stop paying? With sticker kits, check before you buy. In FindMyItem nothing is deleted or hidden if Pro ends, and labels keep working on the free plan.
