Answers to the common questions, and how to reach a person.
Getting started
How do I get started?
Add a location (your home, a storage unit), then an area inside it (attic, garage), then a container (a box, a drawer), then photograph your items and put them in it. Print a QR label for each container and stick it on.
What is the difference between a location, an area, a container and an item?
A location is a place in the world (home, storage unit) and can have a pin on the map. An area is a part of it (attic, garage). A container is a box, drawer, cupboard, suitcase or shelf with its own QR label. An item is a thing inside a container.
What does “items need a location” on Home mean?
Those items are not in any container, for example because their container was deleted and you chose to keep the items. Tap Review now to place each one.
Why does Directions ask for my location?
So the route starts where you really are. Just before opening Apple Maps or Google Maps, FindMyItem reads your position once and passes it to that app as the start of the trip. Maps apps opened from another app sometimes start from an out-of-date position, which can show “1 minute” for a place that is really miles away. If you would rather not share it, say no: Directions still works, and the Maps app then decides where you are. FindMyItem does not keep the position.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone with iOS 15 or later. Android is coming in November 2026.
Account and sign-in
I did not get my 6-digit code.
Wait a couple of minutes and check your spam or junk folder: the email comes from FindMyItem. A code works for one hour. If it has expired, ask for a new one on the same screen. If it still does not arrive, write to us from the address you used.
I forgot my password.
On the sign-in screen choose Forgot password? We email a 6-digit code; enter it and choose a new password.
Can I change the email address on my account?
Not in the app yet. Write to us from your current address and we will help.
I lost my phone and use two-factor authentication.
Sign in with your password and one of the eight recovery codes you saved when you turned two-factor on. Each recovery code works once. If you have no recovery codes either, write to us from your account’s email address and we will help where we can.
How do I sign out another device?
Settings, Signed-in devices. You can sign out one device or all the others.
How do I delete my account?
Settings, Delete account. The app asks you to confirm it is you, then permanently removes your account, your inventory and your photos from our servers and clears this phone. This cannot be undone. You can create a new account with the same email address afterwards. If you signed up with Apple you can also remove FindMyItem under your Apple ID, Sign in with Apple, in iOS Settings.
Labels and scanning
Which label sheets can I print?
| Size | Labels | Works with sheets like |
|---|---|---|
| Tiny | 52.5 × 29.7 mm, 40 per A4 | Zweckform 3657 |
| Small | 63.5 × 38.1 mm, 21 per A4 | Avery L7160 |
| Medium | 70 × 50.8 mm, 15 per A4 | Zweckform 3478 |
| Large | 99.1 × 67.7 mm, 8 per A4 | Avery L7165 |
| Extra large | 105 × 74 mm, 8 per A4 | Zweckform 3427 |
| One per page | A4 page | Plain paper |
The preview on the Print labels screen shows roughly how one label will look. Start with “Code only”: it shows the QR and its short code, and nobody can tell what is in the box.
A label will not scan.
Make sure the QR is flat, clean and well lit, try the flashlight button on the Scan tab, or print a larger size. You can always type the short code printed under the QR (for example K7Q-3MX) on the Scan tab instead.
I lost or damaged a label.
Open the container, open its label screen and make a new code. The old code stops working.
Why does the Scan tab ask for the camera?
To read QR codes. Nothing is recorded or uploaded when you scan. You can still type a short code if you decline.
Your data
How do I back up or move to a new phone?
Settings, Backup and restore: save a backup file (with photos and working QR labels) and restore it on the new phone. If you just sign in to your account on the new phone, your inventory syncs down by itself.
Can I get my data out?
Yes. Settings, Export inventory: a spreadsheet (CSV), a printable PDF with photos, or a ZIP of your photos. You can also import a spreadsheet, and undo the last import.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Everything is saved on your phone first and syncs when you are online. The cloud icon on Home shows when you are offline.
Can two people share one inventory?
Not yet. Sharing is not available in this version.
I moved or removed something by mistake.
Tap Undo in the message that appears for a few seconds. Items you marked sold, donated or lost can be put back from Removed items. Deleting an item asks first and cannot be undone.
Report a problem or share an idea
Bugs and ideas are welcome at the same address. Please say which part of the app it is in (for example Search, Print labels or Locations).
